Birgu Bormla Beggars and beach

When a bloke in Bormla comes begging and you offer him your biscuit and he bares his black stubby teeth, I guess that means he is not hungry. Anyway he stayed for a while mumbling about how I would go to hell, so I ate my biscuit!

Yesterday was nail day and shades of lilac for the summer. An early night and an early morning to start work.

And the ships keep coming, this morning a particularly small one slipping into the harbour at 6am.

Dave and Lizet packed and cleaned, as today they moved into their own air BnB. I dashed to Bormla post office, bank and Vodafone shop and met the team at Cafe Rouge for the morning coffee and “biscuit” (that I was totally prepared to share)

Excursion, after coffee, was to Mosta and a visit to the dome.

The usual parking issues, but lucked out with a side back street in the shade of a tree. And an interesting walk though new streets and old villas.

This particularly large villa with a huge rooftop garden at the back, in the middle of the town.

And a tiled plaque on the road in front, I am guessing the family crest!

Green spaces, and Lizet exploring the park.

Dave, Lizet and Russ went into the church, and I explored the outside shopping area; successfully only stopping to buy a coke to replace the fluid already escaping my body in the warm humid morning.

Resisting the WWII bomb shelters underground and opting for a street level cafe with umbrellas for shade.

By midday, it was time to head to the coast for a swim, Gnejna Bay.

The girls enjoyed the sea and sand and…

The boys enjoyed the kiosk bar!

Time to head home and move our flat mates to their new home, about 1km down the road…..thankfully we can still meet in the middle (Cafe Rouge is a perfect half way point)

It’s siesta time for the Maltese and Russ, in the heat of the afternoon and maybe today I will partake in this tradition before the evening kicks off. Don’t think I will get away with another alcohol free day!

A Wine by any other Name…

For a beer drinker, a wine can pack a punch, Maltese wine is no exception.

Yesterday’s story got lost in the pink glow of Maltese sunset, Maltese Rose and Maltese Karaoke. Needless to say it was a great evening again with some special people.

The morning was unremarkable, work, street market, coffee, noise…..it seems we are becoming a bit blasé about these wonderful summer days.

After a Late morning swim and lunch at Rinella Beach and it was back home for all, bar one, to have a nap. One worked!

The evening plan fell into place well… a Luzzu ride from Birgu to Valletta, and a chance for our visitors to enjoy a cruise free Valletta experience.

Some more images of Valletta, in the quiet hours, before the evening starts.

A stroll down Merchant street to a welcome refreshment break in a colourful cafe in front of St Johns Co-Cathedral , in the heart of Valletta.

Dinner at the Taproom, a return to a restaurant found by George and Kat, with again excellent food and service.

The remainder of the evening is where all the fun began…. meeting family and extended family at Senglea for an evening of karaoke. We took a Luzzu back across the harbour and were delivered straight to the kiosk, where all the action was starting. Being heralded to our table with a great rendition of Hallelujah by one of the locals, or maybe Susan Boyle in disguise!

A little snapshot of some of the stars of the night, after several bottles of the local wine, we are all stars…..

And finished the evening at 11pm in fine form, yours truly one of the finest, conquering a rather long walk back to our house on the adjacent harbour, with the assistance of my new (very patient and strong) friend Lizet.

Needless to say I needed a sick day this morning (as could not raise myself at the usual 5am start time) but will catch up this afternoon before the kiwi counterparts (workmates) start their day! This time difference thing does create a bit of work/life choices!

P.S. I hope my Maltese cousins are still talking to me. (Now they know what a terrible singer I am)

The Kiwi Malta tour guide in action again

Up early, 5.30am for work and on the road at 9.30am! It’s the only time to work as in the afternoons the internet cables heat up and have a siesta, like the humans of Malta! After a good nights sleep, they fire back into action.

First stop, Coffee stop – Maxxalokk- ready for the summer, with the newly painted Rainbow chairs and Luzzu fishing boats.

Already too hot to sit in the sun saw the two Kiwis and two Australian (ex kiwis) diving for the shade.

It was then off, full air conditioning in action(all the windows down) on a circuit of the south of Malta to the Blue Grotto!

Paid our pennies (took the car key out of car and locked it this time) changed into swimsuits in readiness to dive off the rocks!

Oh no! Unlike the last glassy visit, the ground swell was crashing over the rocks, no boats were operating and only a couple of daredevil divers were venturing into the deep blue sea. This, however, didn’t stop Lizet (correct spelling today) and Sue clinging onto the ladder and letting the waves roll over. Very refreshing!

Time for a snack and drinks break before heading north on the rugged west coast of Malta

The Dingli Cliffs – breeze dropped and temperature rising to the projected 40 degrees.

Russ and Lizet returning from a better vantage point where they were counting the rusted cars that had gone over the cliffs onto the rocks below…7 I think at least! That’s what you get with no safety barriers!

Back into the air conditioned car (all windows down) and wending our way through diversions to Mdina. Fourth visit for the Kiwis this trip!

Still a glimpse of green in the surrounds, I am guessing an effective watering system is in place, as we haven’t seen a drop of rain for four weeks!

Ducking and diving through the streets of Mdina, to every bit of shade available, relishing the slight temperature drop it afforded!

Certainly time for a swim!

Pushing the speed limits (to keep the airconditioning at its maximum), we headed straight to Rinella Beach for a swim, surprisingly empty of humans (due to the heat) We passed a garage displaying the actual temperature: 41 degrees Celsius at 2pm..Tis a heatwave for sure.

An hour of lounging in the sea, back on the home straight, having circumnavigated the south half of Malta, we just happened to find a carpark opposite Cafe Rouge….

What else do we do on a hot Monday afternoon, order one get two!

The freshly squeezed lemon juice has now become a challenge for international visitors! Dave rose to the challenge….

Here goes……and he actually enjoyed it, made a lier of me as it was very mild, the five lemons sacrificed for this one had grown up next to oranges and was actually a pleasant drop! (Unlike the 20 lemons – possibly limes sacrificed for my drink a few days ago)

I am sure that my lemon drink bleached my teeth two shades whiter!

And the sun has now set on another summers day in the life of the kiwi/Australian adventurers in Malta!

Summer Sunday

  • After a 2am bedtime, body clock still decided to wake me at 7am! While the rest of the house is sleeping, I took a walk to the car boot market; half the stall holders absent due to the projected temperature rise! By 8.30am and empty handed, believe it or not, the sweat was dripping off me. A cold water at the kiosk for the walk back.

A coffee break at our favourite and a walk around Birgu for our new visitors, Dave and Lisette.

Sue and the wall on the back side of Birgu

And thought to the front side and burning sunshine,

No cruise ships in today and all the Luzzu operators lounging around the birgu gate, waiting for business. A perfect day to take a three cities Luzzu cruise.

I was told it is normally 10 euros but since we are foreigners it is dearer! I told him I was Maltese and he said “In your dreams!” Out came the ID card and the agreement that we were not dreaming, and found out his name was Enrique, which turned out he was actually Italian!

The Kiwi Maltese took over as tour guide, and he smoked and drove the boat!

Our visitors and Enrique, the Italian Luzzu driver!

Out on the grand harbour, and enjoying a nice sea breeze….

The bakery that served fort st Angelo on the outside of the wall, in the process of being converted into a Day Spa.

The lookout tower on the point of Valletta and on into the port harbour, at the back side of Senglea, which houses none other than….

The Giraffe crane! My go to landmark when slightly lost on Malta’s one way streets!

Back via the bottle shop to restock the fridge and a cool beer stop at the very busy football club bar, before Russ and Dave hit the air conditioned rooms for a Nap….Lisette and Sue headed to the swimming hole for a dip followed by a coffee at the recently opened kiosk by the water hole.

Cool shower time and a bit of work before the Kiwi week starts then we are all off to the cool side (Senglea in the shade) for the evening.

Heading for a heatwave

Saturday evening in Malta and the promised heatwave, due to hit us tomorrow, is certainly making its presence felt.

The last day for the sun babies, before their evening flight and you guessed it…early trip to the gym and on the beach by 9.30am!

Sue and Russ took a more leisurely inside approach before joining them at midday for a swim.

Final cleaning and packing, and off to Cafe Rouge for a late lunch/early dinner

At the Birgu church, a wedding Maltese bus! Which then passed the cafe full of the bridal party and, I assume close family! Maybe heading for a quick swim before the evening of partying? Late afternoon felt like 40 (celcius) in the shade!

A few hardy trees still retaining a bit of colour, but much of Malta is now turning its yellow/brown sunburnt shades of summer.

Very thirsty, I ordered a freshly squeezed lemon juice (thinking American lemonade with a dash of sugar) NOPE – 20 lemons sacrificed to make straight lemon juice. I kept adding ice to dilute, but bitter to the bitter end! I guess I should have learned by now that when they say freshly squeezed lemon juice – that is what you get!

Possibly the nastiest drink I have actually drunk!

After food, we then collected bags and headed to the airport. Russ and Sue taking a 20 minute break in the air-conditioning while George and Kat checked in..

Leaving the airport this F1 Red Bull racer (the Brendon Hartley type) was parked in the underbridge to the car park.

Halfway home, George advised that their plane is delayed and looking at a midnight ETA in Oslo, Norway.. this doesn’t bode well for our next journey to the airport at around 11pm tonight to meet Russell’s friends and Kev and Rols (who are all on the unreliable Ryanair flights)… nap time and we’ll check in a couple of hours!

Work, Rest, play in old and New Malta

Absentee blogger yesterday with a work day and an afternoon rest day after a big Wednesday!

The evening saw the team, head to Claire and Brian’s (cousins) for a BBQ – Rabbit on the BBQ; yes I have now eaten rabbit! More and more Maltese as time goes by….

A lovely evening with the cousins and Lots of Laughs!

An easy drive back (no traffic or nasty men in big black trucks) and home around midnight.

Up early this morning for the worker, the rest of the team had a little sleep in….Kat and George heading to the gym around 9.30am and Russ and Sue out to make a couple of purchases.

The small (patterned) ones added to our other small luggage for our trip north in a little over a week – Trudi you may recognise the style and yes..same shop, same lady!

We all caught up around 11am, for a coffee and Sue dropped the sunbabies (Kat and George) to Rinella Beach for the day.

Russ and Sue had an appointment to collect our Maltese friend Carmen at midday, with a trip to Lidl planned (supercheap supermarket).

In the heat of the day an air conditioned supermarket is a great place to spend time. It was a big exercise, however, as we had a list in our heads and Carmen (who can never get there) was excited to find all her favourite Italian foods! Sue spent quite some time running between Russ’s trolley and Carmen’s trolley!

Three hours later mission accomplished, after carrying lots of heavy bags for Carmen and to our house…..it was time

For an ice cold cisk, while folding washing…even those mundane jobs can be pleasant!

Swimming togs on and out, again, to retrieve the beach kids and have a cool dip ourselves!

We suggested we should take a little drive south (like 5 minutes) and see Smart City Malta (the business hub built about 7 years ago and finally starting to gain some traction)

Still crowdless around the man made lake…but really a bit warm to be sitting out for long.

However, if the carparks (which were quite full) are anything to go by, it appears the office spaces (or at least some of them) are now occupied. This development is a modern blot on an ancient landscape….and quite a different world from the old buildings and hustle and bustle of most of the Malta towns.

Situated south of the old Cities, this area sits on a rugged rocky coastline overlooking the Mediterranean ocean!

It was then home (Birgu) to prepare dinner , showers and relax for the evening, the penultimate day of Kat and George’s holiday!

Road Rage and Gozo Adventure

While the day was not filled with tourist sites, the driving, as usual, was somewhat stressful.

Driving through the Maltese city, north of Valletta, a big black Range Rover, with a big fat Maltese person, decided a one lane street was a two lane street and felt the need to pull up beside me, open his wife’s window and tell me to stay in my own lane! Hello one lane…. first experience, and no reaction from the Kiwi driver.

Off the ferry on the other side in Gozo..and heading towards Xlendi Bay for a much needed coffee, the polite Kiwis stopped to allow a truck to pass, halting the journey of a Black Ford Ranger Truck behind us, who then proceeded to tailgate our car for about a mile….so I indicated and pulled over to wave him pass. He was very proud of his left hand drive truck (small you know what) and stopped right beside my window, again I politely said he can pass, and mocking a rental car driver he didn’t move on and very sarcastically said “I can pass”… yes I said…. Again sarcastically he said “I can pass”…. patience of this kiwi running out..”yes please you were right up my bum!” Finally he roared off. Nasty men in black trucks on the roads today.

Finally at a coffee spot, Kat and George looking nice and relaxed! Note no picture of the driver!

At Xlendi Bay! Next stop, only tourist stop on the agenda…

Ta Pina national Shrine…where one can pray for miracles… today it was a safe trip home! Happy to say we are now home safe!

Hotter and hotter, beach stop, Ramla Bay.

A five euro brolly much needed for the Carter side of the family. The water was lovely the beach was sandy, and we were in for a very enjoyable afternoon.

Until, some Geordie Shore replicas, botoxed, tattooed, implanted and loud English twenty somethings plonked themselves next to us. It was all boobs, bums, eyelashes and very loud unintelligent conversations.. At least they appeared to be enjoying themselves, sporting their latest plastic surgery scars and all!

Quite a breeze came up and the Kiwi-Norwegian Crew packed up and headed for the homeward ferry.

Happy to say, a relatively uneventful drive home to a cool beer, in a breeze on the deck, while we await our Chinese home delivery dinner!

Another sunny day in paradise

Ghar Lapsi – another day another swimming hole!

Gym, work, coffee and a quick trip to the street market for veges all done by 8.30am, time for a coffee and on the road by 9.30 heading towards the swimming hole on the west coast.

The swimming hole….

And the Bonnici-Carter-Wulff-Hansen camp at the cove. That sounds like a lot of humans, but actually only four!

Maltese Luzzu (fishing boats) moored next to the rocks.

Filfla Island off the coast.

The boat launching ramp….always a cool turquoise sea welcoming the kiwi Norwegian crew!

A couple of swims and sun baking time for Kat and George, Russ and Sue retired to the cafe on the hill, in the shade and a nice cool breeze.

Then it was home, via the supermarket, Kat and George cooking tea.

Sue dropped the brothers to the airport only to be deterred by…

The “elephant” crane blocking their street upon pick up. Talking to the operator (driving this thing by remote) this crane (concrete pump) is actually called “elephant”

Sue contacted our Serbian friend Milo, and met him after his work (on the cool side – Senglea) for a long overdue catch up….my other surrogate son!

Just a couple of Pics from last night in the evening and our stroll along the Birgu wharf….

George trying to sell left over pizza…

Father son contemplation….in the evening dusk.

And hugs before bedtime!

Getting to know Birgu

A carless Monday found us exploring the city of Birgu and surrounds on foot…

After a morning of work (for Sue), gym (for Kat and George) and eating and washing (for Russell), the unanimous decision was to head to the Birgu waterhole for a much needed swim.

Of course, Russ and Sue stopped for a coffee on the way. A cool dip and a nap on the waters edge was enough for Sue and Russ. Time to explore!

We walked the backside of the Birgu waters edge and fortress towards the town of Kalkara, soaking up the sights and sounds of a Maltese Monday. The odd chat to the locals on the way.

Boats at moorings and boatyards, preparing for a summer on the sea..Kalkara is still a bit untouched by the frantic tourist trade, but obviously only a step away, with boutique hotels noticeably being restored on the waters edge.

A shady stop at the public loo and a rest in the shade before heading back into the Birgu fortress walls.

Walking in the restored gardens between the two towering walls. The original wall of old Birgu and the fortifications of the 2nd wall built in the 1600s (the era of the knights).

The original stairways unearthed in the restoration of the walls and gardens.

Olive trees and the merest hint of grass in the gardens, providing some much needed shade and still green and surviving in what promises to be a very long hot summer.

A bit of a climb out, but we did well, ducking and diving for each hint of shade (and a little rest). We didn’t realise the outside walls at the entrance were so long and more exploring is in order…..the residential areas behind these walls, but that is for another day. We had already had a good two hours on foot, and a cool drink and lunch were beckoning.

Where are the young ones you may ask? Kat is still soaking up the sunshine at the waterhole, George has been home, eaten, slept and headed back to his girl! Russ having a nap now, one and all in their happy places! Me it’s 4pm – cisk time for this Maltese Kiwi!

Bright Lights, nights and heights!

Another challenge done and dusted, Sue jumped off the Cliff at St Peters Pool!

That was today, and my “high” light of the last twenty four hours.

Stepping back to last night the remaining three kiwis and one Norwegian hit the town! George and Kat took Russ and I out for dinner to Valletta. The others chose pasta dishes, but I chose steamed mussels in garlic and coriander (entree size and about 30 mussels)…to die for! Great night out in the Capital of Malta.

Valletta nighttime lights! Strolling back to catch our ferry, now on the Summer timetable and running until late. Not enough research done on departure times however, as after 7pm they don’t run on the half hour! Just missed the 8.50 one and next one not until 10pm. A Luzzu came to our rescue, in the dark, and for a mere 10 euro delivered us back to the old town of Birgu..

This morning, as it is now rolling into the high tourist season, and Kat and George wanted to visited St Peters Pool, the only option was an early start, to beat the crowds!

A shortcut that ended in a walking track and a slight (and very bumpy) detour, we still made it to the destination by 9.30am, and were four of the first 10 to arrive!

Prime position on the cliff edge, George took the first leap of the high side….and as this is my 6th or so visit, I also decided it was now or never!

Before the Jump, which is earlier in this story..

Crowds were piling in by 11am and it was getting hotter and hotter on the rock, we had certainly had the best part of the day! Leaving our great morning behind and looking back at the bay…it really is one of most beautiful swimming holes on the island.

Back to Birgu for Lunch, and what should be happening in our own little square? … a classic car line up!

Don this ones for you – spot the Wolseley! English and European classics parked up in the midday heat.

Lunch and naps for some, I spent the afternoon booking the Norwegian leg of our trip in August and then it was time for a visit to Kevin’s sewing machine for some tailoring repairs on George’s shirt.

Successful afternoon, flights and accommodation booked, shirt repaired and dinner ready, Sues homemade hamburgers, for Russ for Maltese Fathers Day!
